Crisis Averted in South Carolina

A public worker at the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce Human Resources was terminated after it was determined that the employee had downloaded the personal and confidential information of nearly 5,000 other DEW employees to an unsecured portable data device. The information included names, bank information, and social security numbers, and while investigators have not revealed whether the employee intended to sell the information or was simply not adhering to established data security protocols, it’s good to see that this breach was identified and rectified before South Carolina workers were exposed to potential identity theft.
